Plant Based Bakery – Bloomer's, Toronto

As a huge fan of plant-based treats, I’ve fallen in love with Bloomer’s, a vegan bakery and donut shop in Toronto. This place has been my go-to for delicious, handcrafted donuts and goodies for the last 10 years. The fact that they make everything fresh daily is fantastic for those who want to stick to a plant-based diet. I’m always impressed by how consistent their donuts are. With five locations around the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), I recommend you give their homemade baked goodies a try. If you’re in Toronto and haven’t checked out Bloomer’s yet, you’re missing out!

Bloomer's launched in 2014 featuring a menu of dairy- and egg-free, and occasionally gluten-free, recipes. After a year-long search for the perfect spot, the first café was opened in a former Ethiopian restaurant just east of Ossington on Bloor Street. The café is cozy with an industrial garage door-style window and a comfortable atmosphere to sit and enjoy a coffee and a donut.

Plant Based Dessert and Café

If you’re a fan of treats, Bloomer’s is a great option for handcrafted, unprocessed treats. Everything on their menu is 100% plants, made from unbleached flour, organic non-dairy milk, and organic cane sugar. They offer a range of gluten-free and soy-free options too, although their bakery isn’t completely free from these allergens. You’ll find a generous assortment of goodies, from cakes and cookies to muffins and donuts, with detailed allergen information available on request.

The Café Restaurant

I usually visit the original Bloomer’s Café on Bloor Street near Ossington Avenue. The neighborhood café features casual seating which is perfect for relaxing with a coffee or tea. Though they’ve shifted focus since the pandemic, removing vegan bowls and meals from their menu, Bloomer’s remains a great destination for enjoying their bagels, an assortment of vegan treats, and specialty coffees. It’s a lovely place to relax and enjoy some of Toronto’s best vegan baked goods.

Bloomer's has expanded since first opening in 2014, and now there are five locations across the GTA. I only frequent the Ossington or Queen West cafés but there are additional locations at Bayview Village, Mississauga and Burlington for those outside the core.  They also sell donuts at seven Donut Booth locations in Mo Mos Coffee shops downtown. I’ve not visited these shared coffee shops so let me know if you’ve tried them out.

Bloomer's has a Rewards app which I personally haven’t tested because I have a VegTO card that gives me a 10% discount. Keep in mind, their Rewards program only works for in-store purchases (both collection and redemption).

Take Out

Bloomer’s makes enjoying their treats easy with daily delivery across the GTA, or with same-day delivery through UberEATS and DoorDash for nearby addresses. Apparently, they also offer catering of weddings, parties and other events but I’ve never used these services.

I have a habit of picking up half a dozen donuts for special occasions or when the family is hankering for a treat and I’m too lazy or disorganized to bake from scratch. I normally just run to the local shop and sometimes I get lucky and grab donuts through Too Good To Go (click the link for my review of the app).

Last time I picked up donuts, I got a deal and brought my own containers to cart them home:

Here’s a sampling of the donuts I selected (clockwise):  strawberry shortcake (cream filled), chocolate dip, coconut cream (filled), Boston cream (filled), glazed, and carrot cake (pictured in the centre).

Other Specialties

My mom’s favourite treat from Bloomer's is the carrot cake loaf. The frosting is to die for!

Sometimes I pop by and grab a homemade toasted bagel with cream cheese.  Their bagels are soft on the inside and toasty on the outside.  The cream cheese is delicious too and soy based. They have a selection of coffee (latte, cappuccino with plant milks) and teas (herbal too) that I’ve had in their café. They also have cookies, cupcakes, muffins, croissants, butter cups and brownies.

Plant-Based Only

The good news about Bloomer’s is it is strictly plant-based.  You don’t need to worry about whether your order will contain hidden eggs or dairy.  Most of their items are quite rich so from a WFPB perspective, you wouldn’t want to be eating donuts and cookies every day – as much as I’d like to!  I think we all enjoy a treat now and again or have something to celebrate so you can consider Bloomer's as an option if you live in Toronto or are visiting the city.

Where to find Bloomer's

There are multiple locations throughout the Greater Toronto Area, so check their website for the location nearest you.

Café Hours

Hours vary depending on the location. The cafés are open 7 days a week. Best to check their website to confirm the hours for the location you plan to visit.
